LG Shine KE970

The 2nd Black Label series of LG, Shine KE970 is made out of real stainless steel, providing a truly sophisticated metallic look and texture. The attractive design of the phone was inspired by the luxurious shine of metal and natural human reaction to all things that shine.

When I first looked at LG Shine KE970, I couldn't help but lay my fingers on it to feel the quality of the brushed stainless steel. It is compact but sturdy, with a nice reassuringly heavy weight. It's not touch-sensitve like the Chocolate was, it has an all-metal finish with a Nokia 8800-style heft in a RAZR-sharp body incorporated with a slider mechanism. I like the idea of the flat keys, they are larger than the RAZR's and visually well separated making it very easy to use. The 2.2in QVGA screen is brilliantly crisp, and when it's not being used, the whole of the phone's front turns into a mirror. However, you can't really read it in daylight as it gets a little sun reflection. Not only that, it also gets really greasy and scratched easily, just like Sony Ericsson Z610i.

I like the way you don't have to open the phone to receive texts or calls. Besides, LG Shine KE970 comes with a 2MP camera with autofocus and Schneider-Kreuznach optics, which is more than sufficient for a camera phone. Amazingly, it takes extremely clear pictures but it doesn't have a good zoom on it. The media player does video and most major audio formats like MP3, but the speaker is terrible. I would recommend you use earphones instead. Besides, when you are listening to music, you can't minimise the media player and use other features. That's a big drawback for multitasking geeks.

Unlike the Chocolate, LG Shine KE970 has a MicroSD memory card slot plus there's Bluetooth for handsfree use. It also has a very nifty scroller control system which allows you to scroll up and down the menu with a little scroller. It is a very cool and easy-to-use navigation feature making it a lot easier to look around the menu. However, it's just plain cool. I have found it to be a little sensitive at times which can hamper productivity when you are in a hurry. On the other hand, it doesn't have 3G so it's no multimedia wizard and the photo album is incredibly slow to load up. Another disappointment is LG Shine KE970 doesn't autosave messages when you accidentally press another button, that stops me from using the phone.

LG Shine KE970 is a beautiful phone that does its primary job - making phone calls - in a beautiful way. If you are looking for a stylish phone rather than a practical & technically advanced phone, LG Shine KE970 is for you.

Sony Ericsson Z610i

ReviewColumn's rating :
4 stars

Sony Ericsson Z610iWith a choice of three eye-catching colours, Luster Black is always the best choice. Airy Blue looks unique, but it doesn't really look that good(in my opinion), whereas, some people like to be different. Rose Pink is real nice for ladies.

The sleek mirror finish on the front cover is a good reference to take self-portrait photos. One of the features that I like the most is definitely the hidden external OLED display, which can only be seen when in use. Basic information like reception signal, time, battery life, missed call/sms and song information can be displayed on the hidden OLED. It illuminates as soon as any sms or calls come in and it gives the effect that the caller-ID information is floating on the face of phone itself. Brilliant stuff. Another job well done by SE.

I've been using the 3G feature on the phone for normal internet surfing, and the speed is amazingly fast. I'm not too sure about the exact speed, but when I connect my laptop to 3G with Z610i, it gives me a 1Mbps speed, which is sufficient enough. And I love the RSS feeds reader which is a new feature added on. The only setback is that, it's not easy to remove the battery cover. The first few attempts took me nearly 10 minutes to open the battery cover, and made me almost want to throw the phone away. You need to know the tricks to do it. "Turn the phone upside down, press the battery cover, and push" will do the trick. Remember that. Practice it until you get used to it.

In conclusion, Sony Ericsson Z610i is overall a good phone with its basic features and urban and fresh style. It is definitely value for money, except that you need to buy larger memory card as it comes with a mere 64MB M2.

**Warning** User with sweaty palms will have to think of ways to get rid of the smudgy fingerprints or stains that can be caused easily.
