Snipshot

ReviewColumn's rating :
5 stars

SnipshotEditing images can be a pain. No I'm not referring to Photoshop or GIMP, rather, for many of us it's a hassle to even rotate or resize a picture. While it seems simple at first, many people might open up Photoshop simply because they need to rotate a picture which is quite an overkill. Sure, there are probably a thousand and one desktop applications out there that can do the job, but it still seems unnecessary to download and install a program simply because you need to rotate a photo now and then. With the advent of Web 2.0, online applications have been popping up that will help you with this problem as many of them are online picture editing softwares. One such site would be Snipshot.

The front page of Snipshot is simple enough, all you have to do is choose the picture that you want to edit and upload it. You'll then be brought to the picture editing page: this is where the fun begins. Despite being a web application, it has plenty of features that many full blown desktop applications would have. First, you have the simple rotate function that will rotate your picture 90 degrees clockwise, the crop function that will allow you to cut out a desired portion of the picture and the picture may also be resized simply by dragging the corners and sides of the picture, exactly the same way which you'd resize any picture in almost every other program. Thus making for an extremely intuitive user interface as much of it is either pretty self-explanatory or extremely common elsewhere, making it easy for anyone to use it.

However, Snipshot has even more advanced features than just that. First of which is the enhance function. It is supposed to automatically adjust the picture to make it look sharper and clearer. Unfortunately I have used this function with varying results, at times the picture looks like it was never edited in the first place. However, when that fails, Snipshot also has a full blown adjust panel. One is able to adjust the size of the image by entering the specific height and width, the angle of tilt of the image, exposure, contrast, saturation, hue and even sharpness. These functions work extremely well and the result you get is almost always the same as what you'd get in any desktop application. If you feel that you've adjusted your image wrongly, there's always the option to undo each step or reset all the sliders at one go, thus there's no worry about messing up your image.

After you're done with editing the image, you are then able to download the edited into the image into your computer by hitting the "Save" button. The great thing about Snipshot is that you're able to save it in 6 different formats: JPG, GIF, PNG, TIF, even PSD and PDF. It's impossible to find a format which you're not comfortable with. If you would rather not save the picture on to your computer, Snipshot also provides you with the option of saving it directly to WebShots, thus ensuring that no matter what, you'll be able to keep a copy of that image even if you're on a public computer.

All in all, while many people might still prefer desktop applications due to it being slightly more responsive and also it "feeling" more natural to people who are used to doing their work offline, there's no doubt that web applications such as Snipshot will be a lifesaver for many of us. This is so because no matter where you are and no matter what computer you're on, as long as you're using a decent web browser and access to the internet is available, you'll be able to take advantage of the power of these web applications. And Snipshot will certainly fit the bill for being your one stop solution for all your image editing problems.

Canon PowerShot S3 IS

ReviewColumn's rating :
4 stars

Canon PowerShot S3 ISCanon PowerShot S3 IS is a new Canon superzoom camera and an upgraded version of its popular predecessor S2 IS. This SLR look-alike camera is complete with a 6.0 Megapixel CCD sensor, 12x optical zoom lens, image stabiliser and all the photographic features a digital camera hobbyist or even a professional photographer would want.

Like most SLR cameras, Canon PowerShot S3 IS looks very professional in an attractive dark grey color. The camera weighs only 410 grams and it is not much larger than an everyday compact although it is not the smallest around. You can wear the camera in its case across your body very comfortably. The well-positioned controls are big and chunky making it easy to reach, especially the flash setting/microphone button on the top.

However, I'm a little dispappointed with the battery life. The PowerShot S3 IS runs on four AA batteries, allowing you to take up to only 110 shots before they need replacing. I got it a set of good quality rechargeable batteries though, so that it will last longer and take far more shots - I don't wanna miss that once-in-a-lifetime shot. The supplied 16MB SD card is standard but it's only enough for about 10 photos or less, so you are going to need a high capacity card to go with the camera, 2GB of memory would be ideal.

The camera works well outdoors, indoors and in lowlight. I was especially impressed with the camera's picture quality and the level of detail produced is impressive although there is some purple fringing. The camera has an astonishing 12x optical zoom lens that produces good quality images by repositioning the lenses. The lens extends and retracts quietly. Images taken with the zoom are of a very high standard but it struggles to focus and look blurred at full zoom, thus, it is definitely not a paparazzi camera. Like most superzoom cameras, PowerShot S3 IS also has an image stabiliser that helps to compensate for any camera shake and ensures a sharp picture.

Apart from that, the camera also has 11 different scene modes to allow you take shots in most conditions. Personally, I enjoy using the sports mode which allows you to shot continuous images. I was able to take five shots in 7.26 seconds. You can also shoot movies using the movie mode at a maximum resolution of 640 x 480 and it allows you to take up to 60 minutes or 1GB of footage.

One of my favorite features of the camera is the twisting LCD screen. It can be folded back against the camera when not in use to protect it. For self-portrait enthusiasts, you can also turn the screen right round to take self-portraits.

All in all, Canon PowerShot S3 IS is a value-for-money superzoom camera packed with features and the picture quality is top drawer. I simply can't come up with anything to put me off this camera. I expected a lot from a top brand such as Canon and PowerShot S3 IS delivers it. The camera didn't take me long to work out what's where and made me feel like an expert. It is stylish, comfortable to handle and easy to use; likelyto appeal to anyone who wants a good shot.

The Last Juror by John Grisham

ReviewColumn's rating :
4 stars

The Last JurorWhile not everybody would have heard of him, John Grisham has been credited as one of the best authors of our time. In fact, he holds the title for authoring a number one bestselling novel of the year for seven consecutive years, from 1994 to 2000. He is famous for various novels such as The Firm and The Rainmaker, both of which have been adapted into major motion picture films in 1993 and 1997 respectively. While The Last Juror isn't exactly one of his more famous works, it is still worthy of being a John Grisham novel.

The story is set in the fictional town of Clanton and is told in first-person by one Willie Traynor. The 23 year old college-dropout reporter buys over the town newspaper for 50 thousand dollars after the previous owner almost causes it to go bankrupt. Not too long after, a widow is killed by a member of the notorious Padgitt family who has been committing all sorts of legal acts on their own island all along. When the murder occurs, society screams for justice. Danny Padgitt, the murderer, is indeed put on trial in front of a jury and is found guilty but is only sentenced to life imprisonment, but not without any fireworks. Danny threatens to "get everyone of you" if they found him guilty, however despite the threat on their lives, the jury still convicts him and justice is served. Soon, everyone forgets about the murder as life moves on.

However, just 9 years after the trial, Danny is released on parole...............

I won't delve any further into the story, since going any deeper would reveal too much. The short summary there should get many people excited about the thriller. However, it's not as good as it seems. The trial doesn't occur till about halfway into the book, and he isn't released till very late in the book. So what's in between? Random stuff. Seriously, everything in between the trial and his release is almost completely irrelevant to the overall plot. However, that doesn't make it uninteresting at all. It talks of a town going through many changes, racial dis-segregation and other paradigm shifts in society, all from the point of view of the editor of the town's newspaper who is a really engaging narrator. Still, while the content is pretty enjoyable, I found it quite irritating to go through all these pages when they did not seem to have any link with the overall story at all. Regardless, I plowed through the entire book, hoping that everything would fall into place at the end. Alas I was disappointed when none of that turned out to be important.

I was gravely disappointed with the book prior to reading about his release. However, EVERYTHING changed when I reached the ending. I cannot stress how good the twist and the ending was. My jaw had literally dropped in awe when there was a dramatic twist as I had not expected it one bit. The ending of the book really saved the entire thing from being a complete disaster and I really wish I could reveal what the twist was here, but that would just spoil it for everyone else.

All in all, The Last Juror has a pretty decent introduction that will arouse some interest in the reader, but it gets really boring in the middle. Many people will definitely give up on the book halfway through as it would seem to be heading nowhere. However, once you reach the ending, I'm almost a hundred percent sure that everyone won't regret reading the book. A really good thriller and one of Grisham's best plots.

In short,
Pros: Great plot and storyline with an unexpected turn of events at the end
Cons: The middle portion of the book might be quite boring of some

Linkin Park - Minutes to Midnight

ReviewColumn's rating :
4 stars

Minutes to MidnightThis band certainly needs no introduction, having formed 11 years ago and since then selling more than 50 million albums and winning 2 Grammies along the way, first known as Xero back in 1996, then as Hybrid Theory, and the band that finally became Linkin Park some time around 1999 is surely one of the most popular rock bands out there. Both of its previous 2 studio albums have been major successes, with Hybrid Theory selling more than 5 million copies and Meteora reaching 6x Platinum. Now, after a 4 year long hiatus of not releasing any studio albums, Linkin Park is finally back with their new album, Minutes to Midnight.

First of all, this album sounds very different from previous Linkin Park albums. The band has indeed strayed away from the nu metal sounds that many fans have come to know and love. Sure there'll still be a few songs that are still similar to the older Linkin Park songs that many fans of Hybrid Theory will surely enjoy as they're familiar with such sounds: Given Up, What I've done, No More Sorrow, and to a certain extent Bleed It Out and In Pieces. Many fans will definitely be able to relate to these songs as they're pretty similar to the Linkin Park they've been listening to for the past 9 years.

However, almost all the other songs on this album is drastically different from the usual Linkin Park song: Shadow of the Day sounds like it could have been from Maroon 5, Valentine's Day just gets boring after awhile, In Between sounds like Matchbox Twenty, while Leave Out All The Rest and The Little Things That Give You Away almost sound like they could have been from Westlife or Backstreet Boys, except it has Chester's vocals. Yes, this album has definitely slowed down a lot as compared to previous Linkin Park albums, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. Even the slower songs sound pretty good and were definitely unexpected from LP.

However, while casual listeners will like Minutes to Midnight as almost every song is really great, Linkin Park fans might not be as easily impressed. Many of them have grown accustomed to the good old rock sounds that they have managed to produce time after time in their previous 2 albums. Many of them are obviously dissatisfied with this album, seeing as how it only has a 3.5/5 rating on the iTunes Store, with many reviewers there expressing how disappointed they are with this album, with one of them even proclaiming it as being "pretty fricking emo".

All in all, if you're a hardcore Linkin Park fan, stay away from this album, though you should already have gotten it by now. For those of you who miraculously haven't but are planning to get it soon anyway, be warned that there are only a few songs on this album that will satisfy your cravings for a new Linkin Park album. For the rest of us who aren't as concerned about how Linkin Park actually sounds as a band but are rather just concerned about finding good music, go and get this album now.

The Rookie (2002)

ReviewColumn's rating :
4 stars

The RookieOver the years, Disney has been known to produce really great movies, be it in the form of animated films (Toy Story and Finding Nemo, just to name a few) or motion picture films. The magic of Disney films is that anybody from any age group can enjoy them as they've managed to capture everyone with their heart-moving tales. Many of their films have also been very inspirational and will definitely affect everyone who has watched any of them, leaving them to continuously ponder about the film long after they have watched it. Besides "Remember the Titans", which is probably one of the most popular Disney films, there's also a lesser known film entitled "The Rookie" that was released 5 years ago back in 2002.

The Rookie is based on the true story of Jim Morris, who had a brief major league baseball career with the Devil Rays as a relief pitcher. While he's not a very well known player, his story is considered to be one of the most inspirational ones in the game of baseball. Jim Morris (Dennis Quaid) had always been passionate about baseball since young, but a shoulder injury in his younger days ended his minor league baseball career. He ended up teaching Chemistry and head baseball coach at a high school (in reality he had been a physics teacher). When his players felt dejected at their continuous loses, he made an agreement with them whereby if they reached the district playoffs, he would tryout for major league baseball. In the end, when his team reaches the playoffs, he ends up having to fulfill his end of the deal. When scouts realise that he can pitch at an amazing 98 miles per hour (which was something that less than 10 professional pitchers could pull off at that time) despite being almost twice the age of the average player, he joins the Devil Rays as a relief pitcher and the rest is history.

He had first recorded his story in an autobiography entitled "The Oldest Rookie" which was then adapted into this film and the director, John Lee Hancock, has definitely done a great job of bringing it to the silver screen. Almost every single scene fits nicely into the film and helps to add details to the story line that helps to bring everything together, thus adding to the "inspirational factor" of the film. The actors and actresses chosen for this film, even the children, are all extremely appropriate and do a great job of portraying the emotions and you'll hear absolutely no complaints from me about the acting in this film. It's about as good as it gets. The storyline itself is of course extremely intriguing and once again I cannot stress how inspirational it is, with Jim entering Major League baseball while facing other problems such as the chilly relationship he has with his father and problems with raising his own family as well.

If there was one thing I have gripes about, it's that certain scenes can get a bit drawn-out and feel very boring. These scenes include those where Jim is just sitting there doing nothing, or looking out at the window, wondering if he made the right choice by deciding to pursue a career in Major League Baseball. During these scenes, it's just a couple of minutes of music playing with no dialogue or action on screen. However, these scenes are far and few, and even when they do appear, Hancock's great directing along with Quaid's suitable acting skills make these scenes very emotional as well. At times they're even a break from the film, allowing the audience to process what has happened thus far and therefore allowing them to feel for the characters even more.

All in all, the great thing about The Rookie (2002) is in its simplicity, the film sets out to tell the story straight, short and sweet, leaving out all the unnecessary frills that most other Hollywood films would have. Of course, the story that it's based upon is an amazing one as well, and one will definitely be left pondering about the film long after they have watched it. A must watch for almost anyone, especially when you're feeling down in the dumps.
